Cebu City wants to convert barangay health centers into birthing stations
The City Health Office reported that Cebu City's maternal mortality almost doubled from 2000-2004. It said that in 2003 alone, the city's maternal mortality rate (MMR) was at 1:25 per 1000 live births versus the 2000 MMR that was at 0.89 per 1000 live births and in 2004 at 1:40 per 1000 live births.

YEMEN: Rapid population growth threatening development

Central Region Health Service targets zero maternal mortality
The Central Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Aaron Offei, has pledged his administration’s determination to achieve a zero percent maternal mortality rate, in the Central Region, in the coming years.

Timor-Leste Annual Appeal No. MAATP001 2008-2009
Timor-Leste is among Asia’s poorest countries, with some 40 per cent of the population living below the poverty line and one-fifth of the population living on less than USD1 per day...while maternal mortality is 880 per 100,000 live births.

Not much cheer for children
The United Nations Millennium Development Goals, set at the turn of the century, made up the most aspirational development programme ever devised. But a progress report published recently by Unicef says that even though more babies are surviving, more children are in school and fewer families live in poverty, urgent action is needed if the goals are to be met by the target date of 2015.
