Nigeria: Modibbo Introduces Free Ante-Natal Care
To reduce high maternal morbidity and mortality rates in the Federal Capital Territory, the FCT administration has introduced free ante-natal care programme in all its hospitals for all classes of pregnant women beginning from August 1, 2008.

Most maternal deaths ‘are preventable’
...Statistics from the Ministry of Public Health show that on average about 2,500 mothers die each year during pregnancy or while giving birth. In 2005, one in every 280 pregnant women died during the gestation period. Despite the alarming mortality rate, experts from the United Nations Population Fund said 99 per cent of these deaths were preventable.

India to conduct ‘verbal autopsy’ of maternal deaths
All deaths in the country will be investigated and a structured report will be prepared to fix accountability in order to reduce fatalities, a health ministry official said Thursday. “We are soon going to have a verbal autopsy of all women dying during child birth”.

Team to help reduce maternal mortality inaugurated
In an effort to reduce the high rate of maternal mortality in the country, the Ministry of Health (MOH) has set up a Task Team which would mobilize financial and technical resource, monitor its progress and also advice the sector minister adequately.

Ghana: President Gives Free Medical Care for Expectant Mothers
...In her statement to parliament, MP for Tarkwa Nsuaem, Gifty Kusi said the free medicals for expectant mothers is a laudable gesture from the President and she used the opportunity to congratulate government for securing £42 million grant to help broaden the reach of medical care to pregnant women in the country. She stated that with the free medical care for pregnant women, there would be a drastic reduction in maternal mortality, which is a target set under the Millennium Development Goals.

Nigeria: Maternal Mortality Linked to Drop in Education
A Consultant to UNFPA, Professor Pauline Otti, yesterday in Abuja, said the consistent drop in girls’ education had given rise to maternal mortality rate in the country. Otti, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said there was the dire need to educate the girl-child to reduce maternal deaths.
