The Nation News UN prize to Dame Billie
...In addition to Dame Billie, this year’s other recipient was Family Care International led by Anne Starrs, its president. The organisation was recognised for “its outstanding achievements in building a global platform and partnership to end the scourge of maternal mortality and in providing much needed assistance for women at risk in developing countries, particularly in Africa.”

Gorkhapatra Reducing Maternal Mortality
UNFPA has ranked Nepal as the worst affected region in South Asia as it has a maternal mortality ratio that is higher than other Asian countries with similar levels of development.

Jamaica Information Service Health Ministry Implementing Strategic Plan for Safe Motherhood
The Ministry of Health and Environment has begun to implement the 2007 to 2011 Strategic Plan for Safe Motherhood in the four Regional Health Authorities as well as in health facilities across the island...The plan also speaks to the establishment of a National Maternal Mortality Committee, which was convened in 2006, whose major task is to monitor maternal health and guide policy development in that area. The committee also looks at the causes of maternal deaths and the factors that impact on maternal deaths.

...The data shows that one out of every eight women in Afghanistan dies during pregnancy or while giving birth. The only country where that situation is worse is Niger, where one out of every seven women dies during pregnancy or childbirth.

Islamic Republic News Agency Every minute a woman dies in childbirth: UNFPA
Every minute a woman dies in childbirth, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Thoraya Ahmed Obaid said on Monday. In her message on the International Day of the Midwife, May 5, 2008, she renewed UNFPA’s support to achieving quality midwifery care as a way to reduce maternal and newborn mortality and build healthy families, communities and nations, UN Information Center said.
